Instacart launches AI-powered grocery shopping assistant

Instacart has launched Clementine, its AI-powered grocery shopping assistant, across the US and Canada as delivery platforms are improving their technology.

The business positioned it as a conversational tool, Clementine converts customer inputs, ranging from recipe requests to digital or photographed grocery lists, into personalized shopping carts reflecting real-time product availability at the selected store.

This rollout marks a significant step in Instacart’s AI strategy, which includes its enterprise cart assistant platform already active on retailer websites across North America.

Clementine’s features include generating meal-specific carts such as budget-friendly lunches or easy dinners, surface options from recipe publishers, suggest lower-cost alternatives, build repeat-purchase lists, and create occasion-themed lists.

It supports customization including branding, tone, loyalty program integration, and recipe content.

Food Bazaar, Heritage Grocers Group, and Woodman’s are currently retail partners, with ALDI US, Harmons, Save Mart Companies, and Stew Leonard’s among those planned to adopt the service.

Instacart has also formed partnerships with AI providers Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google. This collaboration enables grocery-related conversations initiated on AI platforms like Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google Search’s AI Mode to be completed on Instacart’s platform for order placement and fulfilment.

John Adams, VP and head of product at Instacart said: “What we built with Clementine is a system that understands both of those things — not just what you need, but how you eat, what you love, and what’s on the shelves at your store right now.

“Whatever you’re craving or planning for, Clementine can get you there. The more you use it, the more it feels like a natural part of how your household shops, becoming something you reach for week after week.”

Instacart’s deployment of AI tools within retail digital commerce reflects continued efforts to automate and personalize grocery shopping experiences across North America.
