Walmart has added a seasoned technology executive to its board of directors as the retailer accelerates its use of artificial intelligence across the business.
The company said it has appointed Shishir Mehrotra, CEO of Superhuman, to its board, according to a press release issued Thursday.
Mehrotra will serve on Walmart’s technology and e-commerce committee as well as its compensation and management development committee.
Mehrotra brings more than 25 years of experience in technology, including work as a co-founder of an AI platform and previous leadership roles at YouTube, where he served as both chief product officer and chief technology officer.
“I have long admired Walmart’s ability to innovate while staying true to its core values, and joining the Board as the company builds for an agentic AI future is a rare opportunity,” Mehrotra said in a statement.
“This era is the most significant technological shift I’ve seen in my career, and I look forward to working with the team to shape the future for the millions of people Walmart serves.”
His appointment aligns with Walmart’s broader strategy to embed AI throughout its operations. In 2025, the retailer rolled out a range of AI-driven tools and initiatives aimed at employees, customers, and third-party sellers.
In July, Walmart introduced a companywide AI framework centered on four so-called “super agents,” designed to unify its approach to artificial intelligence and reduce siloed development.
Since then, the retailer has highlighted the growing importance of its customer-facing AI assistant, Sparky, and launched new AI tools for marketplace sellers.
Walmart has also partnered with OpenAI to develop customized certification programs for employees and has begun offering products through ChatGPT’s Instant Checkout shopping feature.
Mehrotra’s board appointment comes just weeks before longtime Walmart executive John Furner is scheduled to succeed Doug McMillon as CEO.
When Furner’s promotion was announced in November, McMillon pointed to AI as a key factor shaping the company’s future.
“He’s uniquely capable of leading the company through this next AI-driven transformation,” McMillon said at the time. “He’s a merchant, an operator, an innovator, and a builder.”
