Instacart has launched a fully integrated shopping experience within ChatGPT, enabling users to discover products, build carts, and complete purchases without leaving the AI platform.
By invoking the Instacart ChatGPT app with a simple prompt such as “Instacart, help me shop for apple pie ingredients,” users can install the app, sign into their Instacart account, and receive AI-assisted product recommendations from local retailers.
Once logged in, shoppers can browse items, review a prebuilt cart generated by OpenAI models, and pay directly within ChatGPT via instant checkout, an OpenAI feature that allows browsing and purchasing in a single interface.
Instacart is the first app in ChatGPT’s ecosystem to support in-app checkout based on the Agentic Commerce Protocol, with transactions processed through Stripe.
Credit card payments are supported immediately, with Apple Pay and Google Pay to follow in the coming weeks.
The experience is now available on desktop and mobile web, with native iOS and Android support, including instant checkout, rolling out soon.
Orders placed through the ChatGPT app will be fulfilled and delivered via Instacart’s retail and logistics network.
The move builds on a broader shift toward conversational commerce: Walmart, Sam’s Club, Target, and Etsy have all enabled ChatGPT-based shopping, and PayPal will allow direct ChatGPT purchases starting in 2026.
Instacart said it expects generative AI platforms to increasingly integrate with its grocery engine, connecting consumer-scale AI interfaces with its network of more than 1,800 retail partners and nearly 100,000 stores across North America.
