Walmart to close Illinois fulfilment centre as network evolves

Walmart plans to permanently shut down a fulfilment centre in Matteson, impacting 111 employees, according to a WARN notice filed on March 27.

Operations from the site will be transferred to other “NextGen” facilities within Walmart’s fulfilment network, reflecting the retailer’s ongoing shift toward more automated, high-efficiency logistics infrastructure.

Workers affected by the closure will be offered a $7,500 incentive to transfer to select open roles within the company, with some also eligible for relocation assistance.

Employees will have access to additional support services and can apply for roles across Walmart stores, Sam’s Club locations or other facilities during a 90-day paid transition period.

Those who do not secure a new role will see their employment end on May 29.

The closure is part of a broader overhaul of Walmart’s fulfilment network. The company recently revealed plans to shutter another facility in Worcester as it consolidates operations into newer sites.

Walmart began rolling out its NextGen fulfilment strategy in 2022, with plans to open multiple high-tech centres designed to improve speed, efficiency and working conditions through advanced automation.

The retailer is currently building its fifth NextGen facility, which is expected to open later this year, as it continues to optimise its supply chain footprint around fewer, more technologically advanced locations.
