Uber Eats launches retail returns service with major partners

Uber Eats is expanding beyond delivery into reverse logistics, introducing a new returns feature designed to simplify one of retail’s most persistent friction points.

The service allows users to initiate returns directly within the app by selecting “return an item,” providing a reason and choosing courier pickup.

Eligible items can be collected from a customer’s home, with refunds issued instantly for orders valued at $20 or more. A return fee is applied based on distance and delivery time.

The feature launches with a group of national retailers, including Best Buy, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Pacsun and Petco, with plans to onboard additional partners over time.

The move builds on Uber Eats’ existing retail relationships, where it already supports same-day delivery for merchants such as Dollar General and others.

“Returns are one of the biggest pain points in retail, and we’re reimagining them the way only Uber can,” said Rohan Mathew, engineering lead at Uber Eats. “Now, with just a tap, you can send an item back and get a refund without ever leaving home.”

By leveraging its courier network, Uber Eats is positioning returns as an extension of its last-mile logistics platform, turning a traditionally cumbersome process into an on-demand service.

The launch comes as return volumes remain elevated. Data from Adobe Analytics shows returns spiking during peak post-holiday periods, while the National Retail Federation estimates total returns could approach $850 billion.

Retailers have been adjusting policies in response. Walmart has introduced higher return shipping fees for some sellers, while REI has tightened policies around repeat returns abuse.

At the same time, many merchants are investing in AI and machine learning to detect fraudulent returns, though effectiveness remains mixed.

For Uber Eats, the returns service represents a natural extension of its logistics infrastructure, reinforcing its ambition to become a broader commerce platform that handles both forward and reverse fulfilment.

As returns continue to weigh on retailer margins, solutions that reduce friction and operational costs, while maintaining customer convenience, are becoming an increasingly critical battleground.
