Walmart is ramping up investment in its physical footprint, with plans to remodel more than 650 stores in 2026 while continuing to expand its U.S. network.
The programme will cover both supercenters and Neighborhood Market locations, with a significant share of upgrades concentrated in key states including Texas (72 stores), Florida (58), California (56) and North Carolina (37).
The initiative forms part of Walmart’s broader commitment, announced in 2024, to open or convert more than 150 large-format stores over a five-year period while modernising its existing estate.
Alongside the remodels, Walmart plans to open around 20 new stores across 2026 and early 2027. The retailer has already launched several locations this year, including a Neighborhood Market in Ocala and a supercenter in Eastvale, as well as additional stores across Florida.
Further openings are planned in Celina and Carolina Shores, with continued expansion across Florida markets such as Lady Lake, Crestview and Spring Hill.
The remodelled stores will feature wider aisles, refreshed layouts and updated interiors and exteriors, alongside improved signage, parking and landscaping.
Walmart is also enhancing its omnichannel capabilities, with expanded pickup and delivery services — including express options — and new digital touchpoints that integrate its online assortment into the in-store experience.
Health services are also being upgraded, with revamped vision centres and pharmacies that include private consultation rooms.
Many Neighborhood Market locations will undergo a new “rapid remodel” process designed to minimise disruption.
The approach condenses renovation timelines by temporarily closing the main sales floor for around four weeks, while keeping pharmacies and fuel stations operational.
Additional upgrades at these smaller-format stores include expanded deli and hot food offerings, improved lighting and fixtures, and enhanced spaces for fulfilling online grocery orders.
The investment underscores Walmart’s continued focus on using its store network as a competitive advantage, blending physical retail with digital fulfilment to drive long-term growth.
