Nordstrom returns to San Francisco with service-focused Local concept

Nordstrom is returning to San Francisco this week, opening its first Local store in Northern California, two years after shuttering its downtown flagship and Rack locations.

The 1,750-square-foot Nordstrom Local, located on Fillmore Street in the city’s Pacific Heights neighbourhood, will open on Thursday. Like other Local stores, the new site won’t sell merchandise but will instead focus on services such as online order pickup, returns, alterations, gift wrapping, and personal styling.

Customers can also drop off used clothing for donation to the St. Anthony Foundation or recycle empty beauty packaging.

To celebrate the opening, Nordstrom is partnering with local businesses to offer complimentary treats, including ice cream, candy, and doughnuts, during the store’s first four weekends.

The space will also showcase a rotating gallery of artwork by San Francisco-based artists, with pieces available for purchase.

“We’ve heard from our customers in the [Pacific Heights] area that they want services such as online order pickup, returns and alterations closer to where they live and work,” said Fanya Chandler, president of Nordstrom stores.

Nordstrom first introduced its Local concept about eight years ago, aiming to create smaller, service-driven locations suited to city living.

The new San Francisco store joins three other California Locals and marks the retailer’s seventh overall.

The return follows a turbulent period for Nordstrom in the city, which saw its downtown stores close amid declining foot traffic and changing retail dynamics.

Despite some local resistance to the new store, including concerns about traffic and competition with independent retailers, Nordstrom said the site will include validated parking for customers.

Earlier this year, Nordstrom opened its third Local store in the New York area, located in Brooklyn.

The company became privately held in 2025 following a $6.25 billion acquisition by the Nordstrom family and Mexico’s El Puerto de Liverpool, with the family retaining a controlling stake.
