Walmart to cut or relocate 1,000 tech and product roles in latest restructure

Walmart is laying off or relocating around 1,000 employees across its global technology and product teams as part of a wider organizational overhaul tied to the retailer’s globalization strategy.

Affected workers are being asked to relocate to Walmart’s offices in Bentonville, Arkansas, or Northern California, according to a source familiar with the matter.

The changes were outlined in an internal memo sent Tuesday by Global Chief Technology Officer and Chief Development Officer Suresh Kumar and Executive Vice President of AI Acceleration, Product and Design Daniel Danker.

The memo said Walmart is consolidating some workstreams, combining overlapping teams and updating certain positions to better align with evolving business needs and workflows.

“Some work has been consolidated, and some roles have been eliminated, and we know that has a real impact on people and teams,” Kumar and Danker wrote.

“We’re supporting those affected with care, including helping them explore other opportunities within Walmart where possible.”

The restructuring was first reported by The Wall Street Journal.

Danker joined Walmart in July 2025 after previously serving in a leadership role at Instacart. He was brought in to help accelerate Walmart’s artificial intelligence initiatives, which have become a major focus under Walmart Inc. CEO John Furner. However, a source said the latest layoffs and relocations are not directly tied to AI.

The move follows a similar restructuring announced a year ago by Kumar and Furner, when Walmart streamlined its global technology and U.S. operations teams, affecting approximately 1,500 positions.

In the latest memo, Kumar and Danker said Walmart has spent the past year working toward a more unified global operating model designed to reduce duplication and improve scalability across markets.

“In some cases, we’ve had different teams working on similar problems,” the executives wrote. “That’s why today we’ve made changes to simplify how the work is organized, make ownership clearer, and better align roles to the work and skills we need going forward.”
