PayPal users will soon be able to shop and pay directly within ChatGPT, as the payments giant integrates with OpenAI’s Instant Checkout system through the Agentic Commerce Protocol.
The update, launching in 2026, will let ChatGPT users complete purchases using their PayPal wallet, including payment options such as bank accounts, balances, and cards, all within the chat interface.
PayPal will also power payment processing for retailers adopting OpenAI’s Instant Checkout solution, handling merchant routing, validation, and orchestration via its delegated payments API.
The integration extends PayPal’s buyer and seller protections, as well as post-purchase tools like order tracking and dispute resolution.
In addition, PayPal plans to connect its global retailer network to OpenAI, enabling brands of all sizes to sell directly through ChatGPT.
“Hundreds of millions of people turn to ChatGPT each week for help with everyday tasks, including finding products they love, and over 400 million use PayPal to shop,” said PayPal CEO Alex Chriss.
“By partnering with OpenAI, we’re enabling people to go from chat to checkout in just a few taps.”
The move follows similar initiatives from Walmart, Sam’s Club, Shopify, and Etsy, which have already introduced ChatGPT-enabled shopping experiences.
