Holiday retail sales projected to reach $1.7 trillion

Holiday retail sales in the US are projected to total between $1.7 trillion and $1.71 trillion during the November 2026 through January 2027 period.

This major growth represents a 4 per cent to 4.8 per cent increase compared to the same timeframe in 2025, according to Deloitte’s latest annual holiday retail forecast.

This follows a 4.1 per cent rise recorded between November 2025 and January 2026, when sales reached $1.63 trillion, seasonally adjusted and excluding automotive and gasoline sectors.

E-commerce sales are expected to experience stronger growth, with Deloitte forecasting an increase of 7.5 per cent to 8.4 per cent year-over-year for the 2026 holiday period.

This would translate to e-commerce sales totaling between $316.1bn and $318.9bn, on the back of $294bn in sales during the comparable 2025 holiday season.

Retailers are set to receive a major boost in overall sales and footfall as the busiest shopping season occurs over the festive period.

Natalie Martini, vice chair, Deloitte, and US retail and consumer products leader said: “Consumers continue to place importance on making the holidays special for their friends and families, while also making deliberate choices about how they spend.

“As they look to get more out of their dollars, we continue to see value-seeking behaviors across income levels, including switching among brands and retailers and using promotions to manage spending. These behaviors are expected to shape how consumers approach holiday shopping this season.”
