Rite Aid has officially shuttered all its remaining locations, bringing an end to the 63-year-old pharmacy chain’s operations after years of financial turbulence.
The company announced the closure on its website with a brief message: “All Rite Aid stores have now closed. We thank our loyal customers for their many years of support.
” The site also informs customers that they can request prescription and immunisation records online.
The news comes after a long series of store closures tied to Rite Aid’s two bankruptcy filings. The first, in October 2023, enabled the retailer to restructure debt and shutter hundreds of underperforming stores.
A second filing, in May 2025, initiated what Rite Aid described as a “strategic and value-maximising sale process” for nearly all of its assets.
As part of that process, Rite Aid sold most of its pharmacy operations to competitors including CVS Pharmacy, Walgreens, Albertsons, and Kroger.
At the time of its most recent filing, the company operated about 1,250 stores nationwide, a figure which is down sharply from roughly 2,000 a year earlier.
The closures mark the end of one of America’s longstanding pharmacy chains, which struggled for years under mounting debt, increased competition, and shifting consumer habits.
