DoorDash has announced a strategic expansion in the college dining and on-demand grocery sectors through two separate transactions involving Grubhub Campus Dining and Wonder.
The company agreed to acquire Grubhub Campus Dining for $300m and also invested $125m in Wonder’s Series D funding round. Wonder operates a virtual grocery store service and currently offers its product selection in Texas.
As part of the acquisition deal, DoorDash will take ownership of Grubhub Campus Dining, a service currently operating across more than 450 colleges and universities nationwide.
The transaction is expected to close by the first half of 2027, subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory review.
DoorDash plans to leverage this acquisition to broaden its reach within the campus dining market.
The company will expand service offerings and deepen its presence in the college and university sector, where it already has a significant foothold through Grubhub Campus Dining.
The funding will support Wonder’s ongoing expansion plans within the grocery delivery domain, with a focus on scaling operations and increasing market coverage.
This move showcases DoorDash’s business approach of acquisition and investment to strengthen its position in specialized delivery segments.
The closing of the Grubhub Campus Dining acquisition is subject to final approvals, regulatory clearance, and meeting other customary conditions.
Tony Xu, Co-Founder and CEO of DoorDash said: “Our mission at DoorDash is to grow and empower local economies. Adding Grubhub Campus Dining to our platform will enable us to bring greater choice and convenience to college students while streamlining operations and reducing friction for universities.
“In addition, we’re pleased to be investing in Wonder as they continue to expand access to world-class food for communities across the nation.”
