Etsy integrates with ChatGPT to enable in-app shopping

Etsy has partnered with OpenAI to bring its marketplace directly into ChatGPT, giving US shoppers the ability to discover and buy items without leaving the conversational AI platform.

When users enter a shopping-related query, ChatGPT may surface Etsy product listings. Customers can then click through for details and complete their purchase using credit cards or other digital payment methods, all within ChatGPT’s interface.

“Through this integration, we’re creating a new way to unlock the treasure chest of our sellers’ unique, handcrafted and handpicked items to an expanded audience of buyers looking for something special,” said Rafe Colburn, Etsy’s chief product and technology officer, in a company blog post.

The move builds on Etsy’s broader investment in artificial intelligence. Earlier this month, the company introduced optional AI tools to help sellers manage stores more efficiently, including bulk editing and an AI writing assistant for listing descriptions.

Behind the scenes, Etsy continues to deploy AI in search, recommendations, and what it calls “algotorial” curation, a mix of algorithmic and human-driven product discovery.

Etsy is also experimenting with AI-powered visual search on mobile devices to match real-world inspiration to available products, and says it will keep exploring agentic AI tools to highlight its vast inventory.

“The human connection these items create will always be the heart of our marketplace,” Colburn said. “We’re excited to leverage AI to make it easier than ever for shoppers to discover and connect with sellers who offer items they love.”
