Walmart has opened a new fulfillment center in Stockton, California, which aims to expand the retailer’s capability to provide faster shipping and delivery to customers.
This new facility will create over 1,000 jobs within the area and reflects the most recent step in Walmart’s transformation of its overall supply chain.
Walmart aims to consolidate advanced automation, technology, and machine learning to move products faster and more efficiently.
According to the business, the new technology enables the department store to develop storage capacity and increase the number of customer orders, which can be fulfilled each day compared to a traditional center.
The new data center is located in California’s Central Valley, and the new facility adds significant fulfillment capacity closer to West Coast shoppers.
According to the business, the facility is high-tech and has an automated, high-density storage and retrieval system, which brings products directly to associates.
This new system aims to reduce repetitive, manual tasks, which allows associates to focus on better-value work.
Timm Quinn, CEO, Stockton Chamber of Commerce said: “This is an exciting day for Stockton and a significant investment in our community.
“Walmart’s new fulfillment center will create more than 1,000 jobs, bring new career opportunities to our residents, and strengthen Stockton’s position as a hub for innovation and economic growth in the Central Valley.
“We’re proud to welcome Walmart and look forward to the lasting impact this investment will have on Stockton and the broader San Joaquin County region.”
The retailer is continuing to hire a range of positions, which includes tech-focused roles as operations continue to increase.
According to the retailer, these fulfillment centers will allow Walmart to reach an estimated 95 per cent of the US population with next-to-two-day shipping.
Walmart marked the grand opening with $10,000 in grants to the Emergency Food Bank of Stockton and Unbound Stockton Community School.
