Albertsons has announced the appointment of Meg Whitman to the newly created role of executive chair of the company’s board of directors.
Following Whitman’s appointment, Kim Fennebresque will move from chair to lead independent director, and the board expanded from 10 to 11 members.
As part of her new role, Whitman will support Susan Morris, CEO of Albertsons, and the entire senior team as well as work on refining the company’s long-term strategy.
She brings decades of experience to the role, previously serving as president and CEO of eBay from 1998 to 2008. Additionally, she worked at major technology company Hewlett-Packard (HP) and transformed the company’s performance in computing according to the business.
Fennebresque said: “Her appointment underscores the board’s commitment to bring proven technology expertise and transformational leadership to all aspects of the business.
“Meg’s role as executive chair complements Susan’s leadership abilities as the company accelerates plans to compete and win.”
Additionally, Whitman will support as the grocery retailer sharpens its strategy and aims to increase profitable growth throughout the business.
She also held roles as an executive director, serving on several corporate boards over the years, including Procter & Gamble and General Motors.
Morris said: “At this pivotal moment, I’m thrilled Meg is joining our board as executive chair.
“As we focus on moving faster and competing more effectively, Meg’s strategic judgment, operating discipline, and technology expertise will be invaluable. I look forward to partnering closely in the months and years ahead.”
This move aims to strengthen the company’s executive team across stores and digital platforms as it improves its AI technology strategy.
