Target launches immersive design experience at New York

Target Corporation announced it will present Target by Design, a two-day New Museum Retail Experience in New York City, running September 10–11 at 235 Bowery.

The event features immersive installations focused on Target’s store objects and design heritage, highlighting reinterpretations of the iconic Target bag by a range of contributors.

Participants include designers Dao-Yi Chow, Maxwell Osborne, Max Alexander, Laila Gohar, Kahlana Barfield Brown, artist Daniel Arsham, actress and designer Chloë Sevigny, and tennis star Venus Williams.

Target by Design is organised around three segments: The Store: Designed for Discovery; The Bag: Designed by You; and The Archive. The Archive showcases Target’s past design collaborations.

A central feature of the presentation is the customization experience, allowing visitors to personalize Target bags through heat-pressed graphics, scarves, keychains, and pins.

Michelle Mesenburg, chief brand officer at Target said: “Across every aspect of our business and brand experience, our belief in the power of great design for all guides how we deliver what our guests have come to expect from Target: amazing style, thoughtful design and incredible value.”

This hands-on activation invites attendees to engage directly with Target’s signature products and its design evolution. Following the New Museum event, Target will extend the experience to its SoHo store on September 12.

The retailer will offer an interactive customization opportunity featuring exclusive bags from the presentation alongside new-for-fall denim, connecting the design showcase with an active retail environment.

The initiative also reflects Target’s collaboration with Pensole Lewis College of Business and Design and the Youth Design Center, supporting the development of emerging creatives through professional development, case challenges, and mentorship programs.

The New Museum Retail Experience is free and aims to emphasise Target’s ongoing commitment to accessible design through its brand and store activations.
