Walmart is expanding its drone delivery services across the US, with drone services set to launch in five new locations in the Southeast region.
The retail giant is bringing its drone deliveries, which are in partnership with Wing, to Atlanta, Charlotte, North Carolina, Houston, Orlando, and Tampa, Florida.
Walmart plans to launch the drone delivery across 100 stores in the areas as part of its goal to make shopping faster and more convenient.
Greg Cathey, SVP of Walmart US Transformation and Innovation, said: “As we look ahead, drone delivery will remain a key part of our commitment to redefining retail. We’re pushing the boundaries of convenience to better serve our customers, making shopping faster and easier than ever before.”
The retail giant first launched its drone delivery program in 2021 and has since completed 150,000 deliveries within 30 minutes. Its first drone-powered deliveries were piloted in Fayette, North Carolina, in September 2020.
In January 2024, the retailer ramped up its drone delivery use by expanding its deliveries to 30 municipalities in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
Moving forward, Walmart plans to continue expanding the program, which is widely used to deliver urgent care products and food ingredients.
Adam Woodworth, CEO of Wing, added: “This is real drone delivery at scale. People all around the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex have made drone delivery part of their normal shopping habits over the past year. Now we’re excited to share this ultra-fast delivery experience with millions more people across many more US cities.”
The news of drone delivery expansion comes on the heels of challenges for the retailer as it deals with the pressure of mounting tariffs.
Walmart quietly raised its prices recently as it deals with the impact of additional tariffs that were recently imposed in the USA.
