Starbucks launches AI powered virtual assistant

Starbucks has launched a new generative-AI virtual assistant to help merchants, which is set to roll out in 35 stores.

The new tool is named Green Dot Assist and is designed to answer baristas’ questions and assist with orders.

Deb Hall Lefevre, EVP and Chief Technology Officer at Starbucks, said: “With this new solution, we’re simplifying access to essential information in the flow of work for partners, making their jobs a little easier while they build confidence and expertise.”

The coffeehouse chain plans to expand to different locations across the US and Canada.

Lefevre added: “This marks a significant step forward in our commitment to streamlining operations, reducing friction, and giving partners more time to focus on crafting beverages and connecting with customers.”

The new tool was created in collaboration with Microsoft’s Azure’s OpenAI platform, with the goal of helping coffeehouse staff to improve their efficiency in serving.

Starbucks joins the growing list of retailers investing in AI to boost their productivity and speed efficiency.

A recent survey revealed that businesses in the US invested around $400k on AI tools in 2024.

Home improvement retailer Lowe’s recently launched its own AI tool to assist staff members with inquiries, which leverages generative AI to provide instant responses.

Retail giant Walmart also launched its own generative AI tool, Wally, which is also created to assist staff members with inquiries.

Starbucks has been undergoing a turnaround strategy since reporting weak first-quarter results, including downsizing to streamline its operations.
