Albertsons Companies is expanding access to its FreshPass subscription by offering eligible SNAP recipients a 50% discount, verified through SheerID’s real-time eligibility platform.
The grocery chain is now providing its FreshPass membership, typically priced at $99 annually or $12.99 monthly, for $49 per year to those receiving SNAP benefits.
The subscription includes unlimited free delivery on orders over $30, a $5 monthly credit for annual members and a 5% discount on select private-label items.
To verify eligibility, Albertsons has partnered with identity verification specialist SheerID, whose technology enables confirmation of SNAP status.
The process is designed to prevent misuse while safeguarding sensitive customer information.
SNAP, or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, is a US government initiative that provides financial assistance for purchasing food to low-income individuals and families.
“At Albertsons Cos., supporting the local communities we serve is a core value for us, and our partnership with SheerID reinforces our commitment by providing the tools to effectively reach the right audience with relevant and meaningful benefits,” said Sean Barrett, chief marketing officer at Albertsons Cos.
“Through this initiative, we aim to deliver significant savings and value to SNAP customers, ensuring they have access to essential products and services at affordable price.”
Albertsons has a long history of supporting SNAP.
It was an early participant in the US Department of Agriculture’s online SNAP pilot in 2017 and continues to accept digital payments for eligible purchases.
More recently, in October 2024, the grocer began accepting SNAP payments for delivery through Uber Eats.
Rebecca Grimes, chief revenue officer at SheerID, added: “We’re excited to partner with Albertsons Cos. to demonstrate how we can support the company’s mission to address food insecurity in local communities while strengthening customer engagement and loyalty.
“Our platform’s permissioned data will equip Albertsons Cos. to help more families have equitable access to the services they need.”
Albertsons operates over 2,200 stores across 34 states.
