Walmart leads in grocery store rankings across key categories

Walmart remains the top choice for grocery shopping in the US, according to YouGov’s latest study.

The retail giant leads in brand consideration, with 63% of American adults saying they would shop there for their next grocery purchase.

Target follows at 42.5%, while Aldi, 32.8%, Costco, 31.8%, and Kroger, 23.9%, round out the top five.

Value perception is another area where Walmart comes out ahead, earning a net score of 42%. Target, 35.4%, Trader Joe’s, 35.3%, Costco, 35.2%, and Aldi, 28.2%, also rank highly for affordability.

The study, which surveyed over 22,000 Americans on their views of 34 national and regional grocery brands, also highlights Walmart’s dominance in online grocery shopping.

It found that 64% of shoppers had placed an online grocery order with Walmart in the past 90 days, far surpassing Amazon, 34%, and Target, 19%.

Additionally, Whole Foods Market takes the top spot for perceived quality, earning a net score of 36.5%, with Target, Trader Joe’s, Costco, and Aldi following closely behind.

Meanwhile, Amazon Fresh has seen the most growth in shopper consideration, up 48% year over year to 12%.

Convenience also continues to drive online grocery purchases, with fast delivery, 46%, and free shipping, 44%, cited as the top reasons for shopping online. Time constraints, 36%, and easy payment options, 35%, are also key factors.

The study also found that Gen Z shoppers are the most likely to find grocery shopping dull, 40.5%, and tend to buy only essentials, 59.9%.

Notably, half of US consumers handle grocery shopping alone, and among them, 35% use online or curbside pickup services, compared to 19% of the general population.
