Associated Food Stores automates distribution center

Associated Food Stores (AFS), a regional grocery wholesaler, has introduced an advanced end-to-end automation system at its Farr West, Utah distribution center.

The new platform, developed in partnership with Symbotic, incorporates robotic case-picking capabilities aimed at improving supply chain processes.

The system is designed to enhance inventory management and improve store deliveries.

AFS also hopes the automation will streamline operations, enabling faster shelf restocking and better SKU availability.

The changes are expected to provide more efficient, aisle-friendly pallet deliveries to stores, as well as expand the product assortment.

David Rice, CEO and president of AFS, commented: “The successful activation of phase one is a testament to our dedication to providing exceptional service to our member retailers.”

“By embracing advanced automation and partnering with Symbotic, we are positioning ourselves at the forefront of supply chain innovation, ensuring that our retailers receive products more efficiently and accurately than ever before.”

Symbotic’s recent $500 million deal with Walmart further underscores its growing role in warehouse automation.

The company is helping Walmart enhance its online pickup and delivery fulfillment systems while creating new automated supply chain solutions.

Glen Keysaw, vice president of distribution at AFS, added: “Implementing the Symbotic system creates great opportunities for our distribution center team members to grow their skill sets and expand their future opportunities with the company.”

Based in Salt Lake City, AFS serves nearly 500 retailers across the Intermountain West.
