Aldi is planning to open more than 225 new stores across the US in 2025, as part of its five-year growth strategy.
This will be the highest number of stores the grocery giant has opened in a single year in its nearly 50-year history in the American market.
A large part of this growth will stem from converting select Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket locations into Aldi stores, following the company’s acquisition of approximately 400 Winn-Dixie and Harveys stores from Southeastern Grocers (SEG) in March 2024.
By 2027, the company plans to convert approximately 220 SEG sites.
Additionally, Aldi has completed a transaction to sell around 170 Winn-Dixie and Harveys stores that aren’t part of the conversion plan.
These stores were sold to a group led by C&S Wholesale Grocers, SEG’s senior leadership, and private investors.
According to Aldi, this deal will enable the grocer to build a “focused conversion portfolio in the Southeast as it progresses its expansion plans across the country.”
In 2024, the company opened nearly 120 new stores, increasing its total to over 2,400 and securing its position as the third-largest grocery chain in the country by store numbers. Looking ahead, it aims to open 800 more stores by 2028.
“When we announced our acquisition of SEG, we shared that we intended for a meaningful number of Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarkets to continue to operate, and we’re delivering on that promise while also supporting Aldi growth,” Jason Hart, CEO of Aldi US, said.
“Over the last year, we’ve seen firsthand how C&S Wholesale Grocers, SEG and their teams have continued to deliver great quality, service and value to their customers, and we are confident they will lead the company successfully into its next chapter.”
The first converted SEG stores are now opening, with around 100 locations set to reopen as Aldi stores by the end of 2025.
The company is also focused on expanding its presence in the Northeast and Midwest, while growing in the West with additional stores in Southern California and Arizona, and entering new markets such as Las Vegas.
“Aldi continues to see more shoppers come through our doors as they experience our quicker, easier and more affordable shopping experience firsthand,” Hart added.
“With our expansion across the country, Aldi is earning the trust of more shoppers in more communities than ever before, bringing us closer to becoming America’s first stop for groceries.”
