Walmart announces plans to upgrade its agentic AI tools

Walmart has announced that it is ramping up its AI initiatives across its operations to streamline its overall workflow.

The retail giant is actively working on solutions that use a next-gen AI model for its business operations.

Hari Vasudev, CTO at Walmart US, commented: “Imagine complex personal shoppers that understand nuanced preferences, dynamic store environments that adapt in real-time based on customer needs, and self-optimizing logistics networks that ensure products are always in the right place at the right time.

“This is why we’re so invested in building the right foundation today, to not only meet but anticipate the needs of tomorrow.”

However, some consumers are showing growing concern towards the use of AI in retail, which raises the question of AI’s effectiveness in retail.

Walmart is currently developing its assistive generative AI tools, including Wally, which was launched earlier this year to help merchants with tasks to be fully automated.

It’s also upgrading its fashion trend search tool, which helps to speed up the research process for fashion designers.

Walmart plans to use agents to replace developers when handling tasks including test generation, error resolution, and environment setup, and it plans to deploy agentic AI features in its advertising sectors.

This news comes on the heels of the retailer’s plans to cut 1,500 jobs in its workforce across global technology, e-commerce fulfillment, and the advertising division.

Reuters obtained an internal memo where the company stated the move aimed to “accelerate our progress delivering the experiences that will define the future of retail.”

It joins the growing list of retailers downsizing in 2025, with job layoffs surging in the retail sector.
