eBay to cut 800 jobs as it reshapes workforce

eBay is reportedly laying off about 800 employees, or roughly 6% of its 12,300-person workforce, according to CNBC, citing an earlier Bloomberg report.

The company told CNBC the reductions span multiple departments and are based on “operating model needs, areas of duplication and alignment to future priorities.”

“We are taking steps to reinvest across our business and align our structure with our strategic priorities, which will affect certain roles across our workforce,” an eBay spokesperson said in a statement.

“We are grateful for the contributions of the employees impacted and are committed to supporting them with care and respect.”

The layoffs come about a week after eBay agreed to acquire Depop from Etsy for approximately $1.2 billion in cash.

At the time of the deal, eBay said adding Depop would accelerate its consumer-to-consumer strategy by expanding its reach with younger, fashion-focused shoppers and strengthening its position in resale.

Separately, CNBC reported that eBay recently settled a lawsuit filed by a Massachusetts couple who were harassed by former company executives after publishing critical blog posts about the retailer in 2019.

Settlement terms were not disclosed. eBay previously agreed to pay a $3 million criminal penalty to the U.S. Department of Justice in 2024, and two former executives were sentenced to prison in 2022 for their roles in the harassment scheme.

Rival Amazon has also reduced headcount, eliminating roughly 16,000 roles across the company following an additional 14,000 layoffs in October 2025.
