Walgreens is expanding its party product assortment following Party City’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy earlier this year, aiming to fill the gap left by the struggling retailer.
The pharmacy giant has rolled out an expanded selection of party supplies at more than 1,300 stores nationwide, adding items including Balloons (including helium), decorations, tableware and other seasonal items.
The move follows Party City’s recent store closures and restructuring, which created opportunities for competitors to capture market share in the party goods space.
Walgreens’ expanded selection is already available in stores and will be rolled out more broadly in time for major seasonal events like Halloween, Thanksgiving, and the winter holidays.
The retailer said in a statement that this new offering helps customers “shop more conveniently for life’s celebrations”and complements its existing everyday essentials.
With Party City having exited bankruptcy in October 2023 after closing more than 60 stores, Walgreens and other big-box retailers have moved to meet demand, especially in neighbourhoods where a dedicated party store is no longer an option.
