Trump expands steel tariffs to include imported household appliances

A wide array of imported household appliances, including dishwashers, washing machines, refrigerators and more, will be hit with expanded US steel tariffs later this month, the Commerce Department announced Thursday.

Starting June 23, President Donald Trump’s administration will apply the 50% tariffs already imposed on most foreign steel to an additional group of “steel derivative products.”

This marks the second major expansion of the tariffs since their initial rollout, which began at 25% in March and doubled to 50% this month.

The newly affected items span eight product categories:

  • Combined refrigerator-freezers

  • Chest and upright freezers

  • Small and large dryers

  • Washing machines

  • Dishwashers

  • Cooking stoves, ranges and ovens

  • Food waste disposals

  • Welded wire racks

According to the Federal Register notice, the tariff will apply only to the value of the steel content within each product.

The administration previously broadened the scope of steel tariffs in March, adding nearly 300 product categories ranging from horseshoes to bulldozer blades.

The latest move signals a continued effort to bolster domestic manufacturing by targeting foreign-made goods that contain substantial steel components.
