Online grocery retailer FreshDirect is opening its first brick-and-mortar location in Southampton, New York, on Long Island over the Memorial Day weekend.
The new location will offer seasonal foods, local produce, and Fresh Direct’s selection of online groceries sourced from local farmers.
This retail expansion marks the online grocer’s debut into physical retail after over two decades of e-commerce operations.
The new store is located on Main Street, Southampton, in the East End village and was inspired by a farmer’s market and features wooden pallets, crates, and natural textures.
Additionally, the pop-up event will include interactive experiences for shoppers such as ice cream socials and wine and cheese tastings.
The new store will also have a Jack’s Stir Brew coffee counter as part of the limited-time pop-up which will end in December.
Moving forward, the online retailer will still fulfill its deliveries across areas in the Hamptons, Montauk, North Fork, Shelter Island, and New York tri-state area.
FreshDirect aims to promote local farmers by sourcing its produce from regional businesses, according to the company.
Meanwhile, other grocers in the US are doubling down on their retail expansion, with discount retailer Aldi announcing its plans to open 800 new stores by 2028.
Walmart also announced its plans to grow its retail presence in Mexico with a $6 billion investment into opening 1500 new stores by 2030.
Last month, grocery retailer Kroger stated it would be expanding its presence in the Midwest by building three new stores in Edgewood and Newport, Kentucky, and Dayton, Ohio.
