Target launches largest store remodel push in more than a decade

Target is launching its biggest store remodel program in more than a decade as the retailer looks to modernize stores, expand grocery offerings and improve fulfillment capabilities.

The retailer said it will remodel more than 130 stores in 2026, alongside opening 30 new locations and investing in supply chain technology upgrades as part of its broader turnaround strategy.

The remodeling program will span stores across multiple states, including Arizona, California, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas and Virginia.

Target said the updated locations are designed to create a more intuitive and convenient shopping experience, with many stores receiving expanded dry grocery assortments and larger selections of everyday essentials and pantry staples. Some remodels will also include expanded fresh and frozen food sections.

The retailer is also upgrading operational and sustainability infrastructure in select locations, including installing natural refrigeration systems, energy-efficient lighting and updated HVAC systems aimed at reducing emissions and lowering energy costs.

Additional remodel features include modern décor and fixtures, specialty LED lighting and updated signage intended to improve store navigation.

Target is also revamping fulfillment and checkout areas, with expanded spaces for order pickup, Drive Up and returns, alongside updates to traditional checkout lanes and express self-checkout areas designed to improve customer flow.

Across categories including apparel, beauty and home, stores will feature updated merchandise displays intended to reinforce Target’s more elevated merchandising strategy.

The remodels will also include updated guest amenities such as modernized restrooms and designated nursing spaces.

The investment comes as Target continues efforts to strengthen assortments in categories including beauty, wellness, baby, home and women’s apparel through expanded and curated in-store presentations.

“These investments are all about making Target an even easier, more inspiring and friendly place to shop,” said Laurie Mahowald, senior vice president of Target Properties.

“We’re evolving our stores in ways that reflect how guests shop today, from more intuitive layouts to expanded assortments,  while also strengthening the role our stores play in fulfillment and our long-term growth.”
