Walmart is overhauling its private label food products by removing synthetic dyes along with 30 other ingredients, including certain preservatives, artificial sweeteners and fat substitutes.
The shift will apply across all US private brands, including Great Value, Marketside, Freshness Guaranteed and Bettergoods.
The retailer said the move is a “significant step forward” in offering customers affordable and high-quality products made with simpler ingredients.
According to a recent survey, 62% of Walmart shoppers want greater transparency in food and 54% say they review ingredient labels. Currently, about 90% of Walmart’s private label foods are already free of synthetic dyes.
“Our customers have told us that they want products made with simpler, more familiar ingredients – and we’ve listened,” said John Furner, president and CEO of Walmart US.
“By eliminating synthetic dyes and other ingredients, we’re reinforcing our promise to deliver affordable food that families can feel good about.”
Walmart is working with suppliers to reformulate recipes while maintaining the same taste. Customers will begin seeing the new versions in stores in the coming months, with the full transition expected by January 2027.
Furner said the change highlights Walmart’s focus on responding to evolving consumer expectations while maintaining value and quality across its massive US food business.
