Aldi poised to open 800 new stores across the US by 2028

Aldi has announced a significant expansion of its US. operations, planning to open 800 new stores nationwide by the end of 2028.

This growth strategy, involving both new store openings and conversions of recently acquired locations, is supported by a $9 billion investment aimed at enhancing the company’s presence across various regions.

The expansion includes the transformation of approximately 220 Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket locations into Aldi stores, following the company’s acquisition of Southeastern Grocers in 2023.

These conversions are expected to be completed by 2027, with the majority reopening under the Aldi banner in 2025.

“This five-year expansion plan will bring even more communities great products at the lowest possible prices during a time when consumers are more focused than ever on saving money,” Aldi said in a statement.

Aldi’s growth will focus on strengthening its footprint in the Northeast and Midwest, with plans to add nearly 330 stores in these regions.

Additionally, the company aims to expand into new markets, including Southern California, Phoenix, and Las Vegas, marking its first presence in Nevada.

To support this expansion, Aldi is investing in sustainable store designs featuring energy-efficient LED lighting, environmentally friendly refrigeration systems, and rooftop solar panels.

The grocer is also encouraging suppliers to reduce costs and adopt sustainable practices to align with its growth and environmental goals.

With this ambitious plan, Aldi aims to increase its total number of US stores to nearly 3,200 by 2028, solidifying its position as a major player in the American grocery market.
