Walmart revamps Sam’s Club supply chain as expansion plans accelerate

Walmart is overhauling the logistics infrastructure behind its Sam’s Club operations as it prepares for significant growth across the US.

The retailer is planning to open 30 new Sam’s Club stores in 2025, with a longer-term goal of adding around 15 new sites annually for the foreseeable future, according to Sam’s Club CEO Chris Nicholas. He shared the update during an investor presentation on April 10.

Currently, more than 30 US distribution centres support the Sam’s Club network, as outlined in Walmart’s 2025 annual report. Across all of Walmart’s brands, the company operates over 370 distribution facilities worldwide.

Nicholas emphasised the strategic value of the company’s physical infrastructure, stating: “We’re not limited by our physicality; we’re enabled by it.”

As part of this transformation, Walmart has also streamlined its operations by closing select facilities. One such example is the Swedesboro, New Jersey fulfillment centre, which was shut down in March.

A Walmart spokesperson confirmed to Supply Chain Dive last year that activity from the site would be shifted to other locations within the company’s logistics network.

With the expansion of our fulfillment network and the addition of new buildings, we’ve improved delivery speed and reliability by moving volume to more efficient facilities,” the spokesperson said.

Walmart’s supply chain realignment reflects its focus on scalability and operational efficiency as Sam’s Club enters a new growth phase.
