Etsy appoints new technology chief and interim Depop CEO

Etsy has announced two key leadership changes as it prepares for its next phase of growth.

Rafe Colburn will assume the role of chief technology officer at Etsy, effective 5 May. He currently oversees technology and product development at Depop, the company’s fashion resale marketplace.

Before joining Depop, Colburn spent nearly a decade at Etsy, where he played a pivotal role in advancing engineering initiatives across advertising, seller experience, trust & safety, marketing technology and customer support.

Josh Silverman, CEO of Etsy, praised Colburn’s expertise, stating: “During his time at both Depop and Etsy, Rafe has proven he can set a technical strategy that enables us to scale our impact and connect more buyers with our global community of sellers.

“He has a clear vision for creating shopping experiences that are highly differentiated, personalized, and relevant.”

Meanwhile, Peter Semple will take on the position of interim CEO at Depop, also effective 5 May.

Currently serving as Depop’s chief marketing officer, Semple has been with the brand since 2019. He will lead the business on an interim basis while the company searches for a permanent successor.

These leadership changes follow Depop CEO Kruti Patel Goyal’s transition to Etsy, where she will take on the role of president and chief growth officer.

Etsy operates multiple online marketplaces, including its flagship platform, Depop, and Reverb, the largest ecommerce site dedicated to music gear.
