Amazon is closing two Amazon Fresh stores in Manassas, Virginia, and Thousand Oaks, California, ahead of its new store opening in Maryland.
A company spokesperson commented: “Certain store locations work better than others, and after an assessment of our offering, we’ve decided to close our Amazon Fresh stores in Thousand Oaks and Manassas.”
The Manassas store closed on March 16, and the Thousand Oaks store will be shuttered by April 27.
The spokesperson added: “We remain committed to Amazon Fresh and our broader grocery strategy and will continue to refine our portfolio of stores as we learn which locations and features resonate most with customers.”
Shoppers can continue to order groceries from the Amazon website with same-day delivery and can also order from other Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods Market stores in the area.
However, the company is set to open a new location on 27 March in Silver Spring, Maryland.
Recently, Amazon consolidated the corporate teams behind its Amazon Fresh grocery stores and Amazon Go convenience stores after an internal review of roles in the Worldwide Grocery Stores division.
The Amazon Fresh stores launched in 2020, and the number of stores exceeded 60 last year, but the company halted expansion in 2023 due to economic pressures.
A recent report revealed that Amazon is the most visited retailer in the US, with 83% of households making at least one purchase over the past year.
