Instacart launches initiative to help California schools recover from wildfires

Instacart is stepping in to help California schools rebuild after the recent wildfires, providing classroom supplies for students and teachers in need.

Through its new initiative, Classroom Carts, the grocery technology company is enabling people across the country to donate school essentials directly to 28 public and charter schools in Los Angeles County.

Nearly 15,000 students have been affected by the fires, leaving many schools with critical shortages of supplies such as notebooks, pencils and rulers.

Classroom Carts, part of Instacart’s Community Carts platform, allows customers to donate school supplies to affected schools.

Through the Instacart app or webpage, users can select a participating school and purchase items from a curated list.

Instacart’s shoppers will then fulfil and deliver the donations, with all service and delivery fees waived.

To jumpstart the initiative, Instacart’s board of directors is donating $1 million to the Greater Los Angeles Education Foundation, the Pasadena Education Foundation, and the LAUSD Foundation.

Fidji Simo, CEO and board chair of Instacart, said: “The recent wildfires have had a devastating impact on the Los Angeles community, with schools being some of the hardest-hit institutions.”

“With Classroom Carts, we’re giving people across the country a simple and meaningful way to step in and directly contribute the items schools have said they need.”

Instacart has also been working on wildfire relief efforts through a previous campaign that has already provided 50,000 essential items to local YMCAs and food banks.
