Target has announced the appointment of its first-ever chief AI officer as it invests in artificial intelligence and user experience (UX) to strengthen its operations.
Chandhu Nair is set to join Target as SVP and chief AI officer effective on 24 August, which aims to bring more focus and coordination to AI tools across the business.
This is a strategic business move from Target to push towards its goals of improving the guest experience, accelerating technology, and strengthening its leadership team.
Additionally, Purvi Shah will transfer into the role of SVP of UX, which is a move that aims to place human-centered design as a major part in Target’s customer experience.
Nair said in a statement: “A more coordinated approach will help us focus on the outcomes that matter most for Target, our guests, and our team.
“My first responsibility will be to listen and learn: spending time with our teams and seeing the business through the eyes of the guests, team members, and partners. From there, we can focus on the places where AI can make a real difference.
“Target has distinctive strengths in its stores, merchandising, and team. The opportunity is to use AI to build on those strengths and support Target’s priorities, not create a separate AI strategy.”
This builds on the ongoing traction of AI tools among retailers, with many businesses implementing the technology with the goal of improving overall results.
In November last year the discounter ramped up its digital innovation with a suite of new AI-powered and interactive features designed to make shopping in its stores more personalized.
