Wendy’s appoints former executive Bob Wright as new CEO

The Wendy’s Company has named restaurant industry veteran Robert D. “Bob” Wright as its new president and CEO, marking a return to the burger chain for the longtime executive.

Wright officially assumes the role on May 21, succeeding Kirk Tanner, who departed in July 2025 to become CEO of The Hershey Company. Wendy’s CFO Ken Cook has served as interim chief executive since Tanner’s exit.

Most recently, Wright led Potbelly Corporation as president and CEO from July 2020 through December 2025, overseeing brand expansion and growth in the company’s digital business. He stepped down following Potbelly’s acquisition by RaceTrac Inc. in a $566 million deal.

Wright previously held several leadership roles at Wendy’s across three separate stints with the company. His most recent tenure at the chain was as executive vice president and chief operations officer from December 2013 to May 2019.

His broader restaurant industry experience also includes leadership positions at Charleys Philly Steaks, Checkers Drive-In Restaurants and Domino’s Pizza Inc..

“Following a thorough and comprehensive search, the board is confident that Bob is the right leader to guide Wendy’s into its next chapter, and we are excited to welcome him back to the Wendy’s team,” said Art Winkleblack.

“He is a proven operator and brand builder with deep industry expertise and a results-driven approach that aligns with our strategic priorities. Bob has strong support across our franchise community, and we look forward to partnering with him to further strengthen the business and drive long-term value for our customers, franchisees and shareholders.”

Cook will remain in his position as CFO as part of the leadership transition.

The appointment comes as Wendy’s works to reverse a prolonged sales slump. The company recently posted its fifth consecutive quarter of same-store sales declines and has been reducing its restaurant footprint. Earlier this year, Wendy’s announced plans to close roughly 300 restaurants during the first half of 2026.

Wright’s return also follows reports that activist investor Trian Fund Management, led by Nelson Peltz, had explored investor interest in a potential take-private bid for the chain.

In a statement, Wright said he was “honored and energized to return to Wendy’s at a pivotal moment for the brand.”

“Since Dave Thomas founded this company, a commitment to quality has been at the heart of how we serve customers and operate our restaurants,” Wright said. “Wendy’s is an iconic brand with a strong foundation and significant opportunity ahead.

“I am focused on elevating the customer experience, advancing operational excellence, and strengthening the franchisee financial model to deliver sustainable, profitable growth. I believe the best days for Wendy’s are ahead.”
