Macy’s plans 14 additional store closures in 2026 under restructuring strategy

Macy’s Inc. will shutter 14 more department stores next year as it continues to reduce the footprint of its core Macy’s banner.

The closures, which span 12 states, are part of the retailer’s ongoing effort to exit underperforming locations. Axios first reported the planned shutdowns. Macy’s later confirmed the list to Chain Store Age.

In a memo to employees, CEO Tony Spring said the latest round of closures aligns with the company’s “Bold New Chapter” strategy, launched in February 2024.

The plan calls for the closure of roughly 150 underperforming Macy’s stores while redirecting capital toward higher-performing locations and growth banners, including Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury.

Macy’s closed approximately 66 stores in 2025 as part of the initiative.

“In executing our strategy, we continue to review our portfolio and make careful decisions about where and how we invest, including closing underproductive stores and streamlining operations,” Spring wrote in the memo. “These decisions are not made lightly.”

“These targeted changes allow us to focus where it will have the greatest impact — reimagining our best stores, enhancing customer service, expanding our luxury business, and advancing our supply chain capabilities,” he added.

Spring also pointed to the performance of Macy’s upgraded locations, known internally as “Reimagine Stores,” which delivered comparable sales growth of 2.7% in the third quarter.
