Amazon to discontinue Amazon One palm recognition system for retail

Amazon will discontinue its Amazon One palm-based identification and payment system at retail locations later this year, the company said in messages sent to users Tuesday night.

The service will be shut down at retail businesses on June 3, 2026, according to customer emails and a support page for Amazon One.

“In response to limited customer adoption, we’re discontinuing Amazon One, our authentication service for facility access and payment,” an Amazon spokesperson told GeekWire. “All customer data associated with Amazon One will be securely deleted after the service ends.”

The move comes amid a broader retreat from Amazon’s physical retail experiments. On Tuesday, the company said it would close all Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh stores, a total of 72 locations nationwide, shifting its focus to Whole Foods Market stores and grocery delivery through Amazon.com.

Amazon One launched in 2020 as a frictionless way to speed up in-store entry and payments, allowing opted-in customers to pay without presenting a credit card.

The technology was often paired with Amazon’s Just Walk Out system, which uses cameras and sensors to enable checkout-free shopping.

The palm recognition system debuted at two Amazon Go stores near the company’s Seattle headquarters before expanding to third-party retailers and venues, including stadiums, airports and convenience stores.

In 2023, Amazon rolled out Amazon One to more than 500 U.S. Whole Foods locations and later introduced versions for building access and corporate security.

The company also launched a mobile app in 2024 that allowed users to enroll in the service from their phones.

The technology drew criticism from privacy advocates and artists, including a backlash in 2022 from performers at Red Rocks Amphitheatre outside Denver over its use at the venue.

Amazon did not elaborate further on the decision beyond citing adoption challenges.

The company said some locations may remove Amazon One devices ahead of the June 3 shutdown, but noted the service will remain available for patient check-in at existing healthcare locations until further notice.

Users can unenroll manually by signing into their Amazon One account and navigating to the “Unenroll” section.
