Macy’s opens largest and most advanced automated fulfillment center

Macy’s Inc. has unveiled its most technologically advanced supply chain facility to date, marking a major milestone in its ongoing transformation strategy.

Located in China Grove, North Carolina, the new 2.5 million-sq.-ft. fulfillment and store replenishment center is part of Macy’s broader “Bold New Chapter” initiative, designed to simplify and modernize its end-to-end operations while enhancing speed, efficiency, and customer satisfaction.

Strategically positioned in the Southeast, the state-of-the-art facility expands Macy’s distribution reach, enabling faster and more efficient deliveries to millions of customers.

The center supports all product categories, allowing Macy’s to ship more orders from a single location and reduce packaging by consolidating shipments.

“The opening of our China Grove facility is a significant step in modernizing our supply chain and elevating the customer experience across every channel – with faster deliveries, well-stocked stores and seamless service,” said Tom Edwards, COO and CFO of Macy’s Inc.

“With this investment, we’re building a faster, more efficient and agile network designed to meet our customers’ needs today and in the future.”

Initially, the China Grove site will handle fulfillment and replenishment for the Macy’s banner, with plans to expand to Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury within the next two years.

The facility features cutting-edge automation technology and an advanced warehouse management system, offering the highest productivity and throughput potential in Macy’s network.

This marks Macy’s third location to introduce high-performance automation, but the first to operate with a next-generation warehouse management system.

At its two earlier automated sites, Macy’s reported productivity gains of more than 100%, and the company now plans to scale these technologies across its fulfillment network.

Sean Barbour, senior VP of supply chain operations at Macy’s added: “Over the past two years, we’ve tested and learned from automation at other sites, refining how it can make our operations more efficient and our colleagues work safer and smarter.”

“Now, we’re building on those lessons with our most advanced deployment yet, including a new warehouse management system that provides greater accuracy, flexibility, and speed.”

The project also ties into Macy’s commitment to invest $5 billion through 2025 in technology and sustainable initiatives aimed at creating “a more equitable and sustainable future.”
