Walmart to close Sam’s Club fulfillment center in Texas

Walmart has confirmed it will close a Fort Worth, Texas fulfillment center that services Sam’s Club online orders, with operations shifting to other regional facilities, Reuters has reported.

While the company has not disclosed the exact number of affected workers, sources say the closure could impact hundreds of employees.

The DFW4 center’s operations will be redistributed to Walmart’s high-tech Lancaster fulfillment center and three other Dallas-area facilities. The closure is expected to be completed by this summer.

“We’re continuously evolving our fulfillment network to improve service for our customers and members as their needs change,” Walmart said in a statement, noting that impacted employees will be offered roles elsewhere within the company.

The retailer is providing a $7,500 transfer bonus and relocation support for employees who choose to move to one of Walmart’s other high-tech fulfillment centers nationwide.

Additional opportunities may also be available in nearby Walmart stores and facilities.

Walmart has been investing heavily in its e-commerce infrastructure to compete with Amazon, a strategy that helped the company post its first-ever profit from online sales in Q1.

Sam’s Club also reported strong performance, with sales rising 27% and more than 50% of members now using digital transactions.

Freight handler positions at the DFW4 site reportedly paid between $21.60 and $25.10 per hour, according to Walmart’s job listings. The company emphasized it is working to support all affected employees through the transition.
