Walmart partners with Medicare Advantage to help seniors maximise health benefits

Walmart has launched a new initiative aimed at helping seniors on Medicare Advantage plans better access and use their health benefits when shopping online or in-store.

The US retail giant now allows Medicare Advantage members to link their benefit cards to their Walmart accounts.

Once connected, shoppers will see a “benefit program eligible” icon on items that are covered by their specific plan, making it easier to identify eligible over-the-counter (OTC) products, vitamins, supplements, and even healthy food items.

Many Medicare Advantage plans offer additional allowances for wellness and OTC products, but nearly two-thirds of seniors fail to use those benefits, largely due to confusion over which items are eligible, according to the Consumer Healthcare Products Association.

Walmart’s new system aims to close that gap by offering:

  • Clear labelling of eligible items both online and via in-store app scanning

  • A tracker that shows remaining benefit balances

  • A streamlined checkout for mixed baskets including health products, food and general merchandise

  • Same-day pickup or delivery in as little as one hour

“We saw an opportunity to streamline the health benefits shopping journey and make it easier for customers to discover eligible items,” Ralph Clare, Vice President at Walmart told Mail Online.

As part of the launch, Walmart is also debuting Walmart Everyday Health Signals, a platform for benefit providers like Medicare Advantage plans to integrate with Walmart.

It combines AI-powered insights to guide customers toward healthier purchasing decisions.

The move comes amid wider scrutiny of Walmart’s use of AI-driven tools at Sam’s Club, where some critics have raised privacy concerns over camera-based checkout-free shopping systems, technology that may prove challenging for older or less tech-savvy consumers.
