Walmart cuts jobs amid expansion and relocation plan

Walmart is cutting an undisclosed number of corporate positions to restructure its office network and prompt current employees to relocate.

The large-scale retailer is making a significant shift in its work structure, opting to return to office work and encouraging staff to join more in-person teams.

Office-based employees in smaller locations are being asked to move to larger-scale centers in closer proximity to their teams in California or Arkansas, according to a memo by chief people officer Donna Morris, seen by Retail Dive.

The goal of this recent move is to increase the levels of team engagement and communication.

Morris said: “Our values and culture are strategic differentiators for us as a company, and they are fostered by being together.

“We’ve already seen the benefits of having more teams working together in person, and today we are sharing another step that will help accelerate our momentum.”

In addition, Morris announced expansion plans, with new locations set to open in Sunnyvale, California and Bellevue, Washington.

However, the Charlotte, North Carolina, office will be closed, and current employees were given the options of relocation support or severance.

This new change in working structure follows a global trend of large companies shifting away from hybrid and remote working, citing increased productivity as an advantage of in-person teams.
