Walmart names e-commerce chief David Guggina as U.S. CEO in leadership reshuffle

Walmart Inc. has appointed company veteran David Guggina as president and CEO of Walmart U.S. as part of a broader leadership overhaul ahead of John Furner’s elevation to chief executive of the company.

Guggina, currently executive vice president and chief e-commerce officer for Walmart U.S., will assume the role effective Feb. 1. He succeeds Furner, who will take over as Walmart Inc. CEO on Jan. 31, following the retirement of Doug McMillon after more than a decade at the helm.

An eight-year Walmart veteran, Guggina previously served as executive vice president of supply chain operations for Walmart U.S. Before joining Walmart, he spent nine years at Amazon.

“Under Guggina’s leadership, Walmart has built industry-leading delivery capabilities that today serve 95% of U.S. households in under three hours,” the company said, adding that his experience across e-commerce and supply chain positions him to advance Walmart’s goal of becoming “America’s favorite place to shop.”

As part of the reorganization, Chris Nicholas, president and CEO of Sam’s Club U.S., will succeed Kathryn McLay as president and CEO of Walmart International.

McLay, who has held the role since 2023, will remain through Jan. 31 and stay on through the first quarter to support the transition.

Nicholas previously served as chief operating officer of Walmart U.S., with oversight of store operations and supply chain, and as CFO for both Walmart U.S. and Walmart International.

Seth Dallaire, executive vice president and chief growth officer for Walmart U.S., has been promoted to executive vice president and chief growth officer for Walmart Inc.

In the newly expanded enterprise role, Dallaire will oversee global platforms including Walmart Connect, Walmart+, Walmart Data Ventures, Vizio, Sam’s Club MAP and a global marketplace platform.

Latriece Watkins, executive vice president and chief merchandising officer for Walmart U.S., has been named president and CEO of Sam’s Club U.S.

Watkins began her Walmart career as an intern in 1997 and has held senior leadership roles across merchandising, people operations and U.S. store operations at both Walmart and Sam’s Club.

“These internal promotions reflect our culture of opportunity and the depth of our leadership bench,” Furner said. “As AI rapidly reshapes retail, we are centralizing our platforms to accelerate shared capabilities, freeing up our operating segments to be more focused on and closer to our customers and members.”

The leadership changes take effect Feb. 1 and are intended to position Walmart for its next phase of growth amid accelerating technological change.
