Amazon trims headcount in books division, including Kindle and Goodreads teams

Amazon has laid off fewer than 100 employees from its books division, affecting staff across its Kindle and Goodreads operations, the company confirmed Thursday.

The move is part of broader efforts to streamline operations and improve efficiency, a company spokesperson said.

“As part of our ongoing work to make our teams and programs operate more efficiently, and to better align with our business roadmap, we’ve made the difficult decision to eliminate a small number of roles within the Books organization,” they noted in a statement.

The Seattle-based tech giant has been gradually cutting jobs across several units in recent months, including its devices and services division, Wondery podcast network, and corporate communications and retail operations.

CEO Andy Jassy is leading a push to reduce internal bureaucracy, which includes efforts to flatten management structures and trim middle layers.

Despite the latest cuts, Amazon grew its workforce modestly during the first quarter of 2025, adding about 4,000 jobs compared to the final quarter of 2024, according to a recent filing.

Shares of Amazon closed up 0.3% on Thursday but remain down 5.6% year-to-date. The job reductions in the books division were first reported by Business Insider.
