Spirit Halloween announces pop-up of 1,500 stores

Spirit Halloween is gearing up for its biggest season yet, with more than 1,500 temporary stores set to open across North America this year, according to Chain Store Age.

The seasonal retailer, owned by Spencer Spirit Holdings, is investing in its most theatrical shopping experience to date. For 2025, the in-store theme of Madison Scare Park transforms outlets into haunted subway stations, complete with interactive set pieces, animatronics, and horror-inspired décor.

Among the headline attractions are:

  • Twisted Grandma — featuring dual-motor movement

  • Trick or Treat Pete — a macabre twist on a candy stand

  • Jack the Reaper — equipped with motion-tracking technology to surprise unsuspecting shoppers

To deliver the spectacle, Spirit Halloween has hired around 50,000 seasonal staff for its pop-up network. Beyond costumes and animatronics, the retailer is also expanding into lifestyle products, from horror-themed kitchenware and bathroom décor to perennial bestsellers like Marvel costumes, Squid Game jumpsuits, and new Wicked-inspired outfits.

Chief executive Steven Silverstein said the brand’s ambition is to be more than a retailer, positioning its stores as immersive entertainment destinations.

“The opening of Spirit Halloween stores signals the start of something special for our guests and our dedicated team that works year-round to reach this moment,” Silverstein said.

“We know every guest looks to our stores as an entertainment destination that brings the spirit of the season to life – and this year is no different, as we unveil our unique in-store experience inspired by the gritty allure of underground subways.”

Headquartered in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey, Spirit Halloween is part of the same parent company as mall retailer Spencer’s Gifts.
