Walmart is ramping up its enterprise-wide use of artificial intelligence, rolling out a new suite of AI tools aimed at improving store operations and empowering associates.
The latest upgrade, now available via the Walmart associate app, initially targets overnight stocking shifts, offering clear, AI-driven task guidance.
Early results show store leaders have reduced shift planning time from 90 minutes to just 30, with pilots underway for broader implementation across other shifts.
Walmart is also enhancing its conversational AI platform, already used for basic queries, by adding generative AI.
The upgrade will transform process guides into step-by-step instructions, enabling associates to get help with tasks like “How do I process a return without a receipt?”
Additional AI and tech-enabled tools include:
-
Augmented reality with RFID: Expanding its 2021 VizPick AR rollout, Walmart is now integrating RFID to visually guide employees to merchandise that needs restocking, cutting backroom inventory time.
-
Real-time translation: Supporting 44 languages, this AI-powered tool enables seamless text and voice conversations, recognising Walmart-specific terms like “Great Value” for more accurate customer interactions. Global expansion and new language support are planned.
All AI features are built on Walmart’s proprietary Element machine learning platform.
“AI is a key enabler in improving how we work,” said Greg Cathey, SVP of transformation & innovation at Walmart. “The impact isn’t incremental — it’s transformational.”
Walmart, which operates more than 10,750 stores in 19 countries, continues to use AI to streamline operations while reinforcing its commitment to frontline workforce innovation.
