Starbucks adds economist Dambisa Moyo and tech CEO Marissa Mayer to board amid turnaround push

Starbucks has appointed economist Dambisa Moyo and Marissa Mayer, CEO of an AI startup and former Yahoo chief, to its board of directors, effective June 25.

The additions come as the coffee chain intensifies its “Back to Starbucks” strategy — a multi-pronged initiative aimed at revamping the customer experience, enhancing employee (partner) engagement, and expanding digital capabilities.

Under CEO Brian Niccol, the company is working to reaccelerate store growth while moving away from heavy discounting and promotions.

Starbucks said the new board members bring valuable insights into technology, transformation, and global affairs, areas seen as pivotal to its next chapter.

With these appointments, the Starbucks board now comprises 11 directors.
