Big Lots reopens 78 more stores in final wave under new ownership

Big Lots is reopening 78 locations on Thursday across nine US states, including Florida, Georgia, and Ohio, bringing the total number of stores reopened under Variety Wholesalers’ ownership to 219.

This marks the fourth and final wave of reopenings since the company was acquired earlier this year.

The relaunch effort began in April, roughly seven months after Big Lots filed for bankruptcy and began liquidation sales at all of its locations.

Although an initial sale deal fell through, Big Lots struck a new agreement with Gordon Brothers Retail Partners and Variety Wholesalers in December.

That deal allowed the purchase of between 200 and 400 stores and up to two distribution centers.

According to Variety Wholesalers, the company is returning Big Lots to its original closeout-based strategy, focusing on value by sourcing overstock, liquidation, and surplus deals.

“New ownership is focused on providing incredible value to customers,” Rachel Roux, Big Lots’ marketing and brand manager told Retail Dive.

CEO Lisa Seigies noted that the customer response has been overwhelmingly positive. “This enthusiastic response reinforces our belief that taking Big Lots back to the roots of what made it a huge success resonates with our customers,” she said.

While the current focus is on the Eastern US, Variety Wholesalers said it may explore further expansion if it aligns with the company’s strategy and customer needs.
