Walmart is significantly scaling its drone delivery operations, extending the service to 150 more stores across the United States.
The move comes via an expanded partnership with Wing, the on-demand drone delivery company backed by Alphabet.
The rollout, scheduled to take place over the next year, will bring Walmart’s total drone-enabled locations to more than 270 by 2027.
Once fully deployed, the network is expected to reach approximately 40 million consumers, spanning markets from Los Angeles to Miami.
According to Wing, the expansion builds on strong performance in existing markets, including the Dallas–Fort Worth area and metro Atlanta.
New service areas will include major cities such as Los Angeles, St. Louis, Cincinnati, and Miami, with additional markets to be announced.
These locations add to previously disclosed expansion plans for Houston; Orlando and Tampa, Florida; and Charlotte, North Carolina. Drone deliveries in the Houston market are set to begin on Jan. 15.
“Drone delivery plays an important role in our ability to deliver what customers want, exactly when they want it,” said Greg Cathey, senior VP of digital fulfillment transformation at Walmart.
“Whether it’s a last-minute ingredient for dinner, a must-have charger for a phone, or a late-night essential for a busy family, the strong adoption we’ve seen confirms that this is the future of convenience.
By expanding drone delivery to new major metro areas, we are helping more customers solve for their last-minute needs faster than ever before.”
Walmart first tested drone delivery in late 2021, launching the service from three stores in Northwest Arkansas.
The retailer later deepened its partnership with Wing in August 2023, expanding drone operations into the Dallas–Fort Worth market.
