Whole Foods Market expands its smaller-format ‘Daily Shop’ concept beyond New York

Whole Foods Market has expanded its smaller-format store concept, opening the fourth location of its Whole Foods Market Daily Shop in the Crystal City neighbourhood of Arlington, Virginia, marking its first outside of New York City.

At just over 10,000 square feet, the new store is the largest Daily Shop yet, designed to provide customers with a streamlined shopping experience focused on convenience and accessibility in dense urban environments.

Whole Foods first unveiled its “quick-shop” concept in March 2024, outlining plans for stores ranging between 7,000 and 14,000 square feet, roughly a quarter to half the size of a traditional 40,000-square-foot Whole Foods Market.

The format aims to help the grocer expand into metropolitan areas where larger locations are less feasible.

The first Daily Shop debuted in September 2024 in Manhattan’s Lenox Hill neighbourhood, followed by openings in Hell’s Kitchen and the East Village.

Additional stores are in development across the New York metro area, including sites in Hoboken, N.J., and Brooklyn’s Williamsburg neighbourhood.

As part of its community initiatives, Whole Foods said it will donate in-kind products to Northern Virginia Food Rescueand make financial contributions to ALIVE!, Inc. and the Arlington Food Assistance Center.

The Daily Shop format underscores Whole Foods Market’s strategy to combine its hallmark focus on fresh, natural and organic products with smaller, neighbourhood-oriented stores that cater to urban shoppers seeking convenience and quality in one place.
